1 Seminar模式

Seminar的意思是“研討會”,英語解釋為:“Seminar is a small group of advanced students in a college or graduate school engaged in original research or intensive study under the guidance of a professor who meet regularly with them to discuss the reports and findings.”Seminar是現(xiàn)今廣泛流行于歐、美、日、澳等發(fā)達國家和地區(qū)高等學校和研究機構的一種基本的教學科研方法,是學生為研究某一問題而與教師、專家共同討論的一種交互式教學路徑。在Seminar教學模式中,學生圍繞話題內容做各項工作,積極參與討論,培養(yǎng)學生的自學能力、訓練學生的口頭表達能力和提高他們的綜合應用能力。

2 Seminar模式引入大二英語精讀課堂的可行性

Seminar教學模式適用學科廣泛,在國外的不同教學體系中廣泛應用。我國的Seminar教學模式多用于研究生階段的研究性教學,或者是某學科的專業(yè)英語課堂之中,在大學英語教學中Seminar教學模式的嘗試還較少。事實上,本科是研究型和學科型教育,在英語課堂中學生只是被動地聆聽教師精講課文,記錄一些詞句的意思是遠遠不夠的。本文的Seminar教學模式定位于大學二年級,這是因為學生之前進行了一年的英語基礎學習,掌握了基本詞匯,鞏固了語法知識。通過四級考試的學生傾向于提高自己的聽說能力,以及自身語言應用能力,而且學生已經互相熟悉,消除了陌生感和膽怯心理,上臺發(fā)言能夠更加自如。

Seminar模式的基本形式是每個學生準備一個談話內容,并就這個內容做好充分的準備,包括查尋有關資料,準備演講材料和可能碰到的問題,學生將自己準備好的話題進行陳述,并回答和解釋其他學生的問題和質疑。這種教學不同于學生被動學習的傳統(tǒng)模式,把英語學習主動權交給學生,能夠提高學生的學習熱情,促進英語教學工作。同時,Seminar模式不僅要求學生能聽得懂、讀得懂,還要求他們講得明、寫得好,彌補了傳統(tǒng)講授法的不足,從整體上發(fā)展學生的四種基本能力,促進聽、說、讀、寫、譯各項技能協(xié)調發(fā)展。在完成Seminar的任務中,學生利用課外時間完成大量的工作,共同討論問題,培養(yǎng)和訓練學生探索問題和解決問題的能力。

總之,Seminar模式使學生自然而然地運用科學研究的方法,經歷科學研究的過程,培養(yǎng)學生的科研能力,這對學生高年級的專業(yè)學習很有幫助,它被引入到本科英語教學中具有現(xiàn)實意義。

3 Seminar模式教學實踐

課前準備 在大二新學期一開始就將全班學生分成幾組,每組選組長一名,組長負責安排、協(xié)調各組員的具體任務。在課本新單元學習前一周,教師根據(jù)單元教學內容擬定相關的主題,告之并引導學生提前閱讀教材,搜集并整理與文章內容有關的信息資料,鼓勵學生發(fā)散性思維,暢所欲言,提煉自己小組的觀點,并形成文字材料。

例如,學校精讀課上使用的是上海外語教育出版社的教材《全新版大學英語》綜合教程,在講授第一單元課文“Mr. Doherty Builds His Dream Life”時,筆者就擬定了一個相關主題“City life vs. Country life”,要求學生查找資料,對兩種生活方式進行對比。

Seminar模式強調學生的自主型學習,將傳統(tǒng)的“講授式”課堂轉化為“講授+討論式”二元結構模式。在Seminar模式的課堂中,筆者并不是一開始就滔滔不絕地講“城市生活和鄉(xiāng)村生活”,而是將這個話題拋給學生,讓學生利用課外時間分工合作,主動地去收集相關的背景材料。學生由單詞到詞組、由短語到句子,最后把手頭的資料進行分類整合,討論形成該組的發(fā)言報告。除了文字材料,學生還被鼓勵查找圖片,插入音樂、聲音,下載視頻,制作成生動活潑的PowerPoint進行展示。這一系列的活動鍛煉了學生的動手能力,在完成英語任務的同時也提高了他們的電腦應用水平。

可以看出,Seminar模式的核心內容是教師以培養(yǎng)學生實踐運用能力為主旨,訓練學生進行研究式學習,培養(yǎng)學生合作互助精神,在完成任務的同時學會英語思維。
